I was pondering using 3d6 in the next game of m20 I run, and then thought “meh I’ll go all the way”. To accomplish this I basically took the lower half of the average a dice would roll and added or subtracted from 3 (the lower average on a d6) to achieve it. This excludes the d20 which would get represented with 3d6.

One of the things I hadn’t thought about was that because each die would group more around its average the steps up and down would be more pronounced. For example the d12 would almost always beat out the d6 when it came to hp.
I’m going to try and wrangle another game up soon and I’ll have to report back on how things go. If anyone else has experimented with using just d6 in a d20 based game I’d love to hear about how it went.
