So last weekend I and some friends got together and had ourselves a Single Malt Saturday. I’m trying to acclimate myself to some finer(ish) Scotches before TempleCon: where I’ll be in a Single Malt event. We got ourselves a bottle of Macallan 12 year which I was very pleased with. I would certainly suggest the bottle to anyone who wants to ease their way into Scotch as it’s not too pricey and very light on the palette.
When it came to games we ended up playing Settlers of Catan (a staple with our group), and play-tested a friends game called Dead Run. For those somehow not aware of Settlers of Catan it’s a spiffy little Euro game where players build settlements through an island trying to position yourself around resource rich areas to build the best foothold on the island; by reaching 10 points before the other players. It’s a great game that I’ve never had anyone not like and strongly suggested.
What I’d really like to talk about was our play-test of Dead Run. My good friend Rob Pillans has drafted up a nice little race to the finish boardgame that I really dig. One player is designated the zombie and the other players represent survivors trying to race to the end of the board where 1 of those players can escape. On the board there are neutral zombie tokens that move on their own, and barricades that players can try to bypass as a shortcut.
The game adds a fantastic competitive edge where zombies and humans can all play cards to screw one another in various ways. One of the unique facets of the game that I really enjoyed was that there is one deck of cards with the human’s ability on the top and the reverse side having the zombie’s effect. This is important because if a survivor dies they become a zombie and need only turn the hand (and token) upside down to immediately be ready for their new role.
I definitely liked thins game and I’ll try to keep people appraised of its progress, and when/if open play-tests open for it. If you want to keep posted sign up to the Kobold Insider for semi-regular updates when worthwhile news occurs: around once a week.
If you’ve got a game that needs to be play-tested (and can be played in a night) give me a pitch below and perchance when my group gets together for another Single Malt Saturday. Also if you just have a suggestion on other Single Malts or games I’d love to hear them!
